Beta
Beta is Charlene's Betta Fish (Siamese fighting fish). She got him on one Sunday, 2002 autumn. I guess he is almost a year old now, I am not sure how old is he in terms of the fish age. Beta has the most beautiful blue skin, she named him Blueberry Sunday and his nickname is Beta. We always call him Beta though. Charlene treats him really nice; she got him lots of aquarium plants, statues and decoration. She would change the scenery once a while and keep Beta exciting and exploring the new place. Once we see lots of bubbles floating on the surface of the water, then we will know he is happy.
Beta can do couple tricks or games. He can play:
- Following Me - when we put a small mirror facing Beta and start moving the mirror, he would think there is another beta fish and he would start following the mirror.
- Charge - when we put a small mirror facing Beta, but don't move the mirror. Beta will get really angry and he would flare and charge to us.
- Wave to Me - when we sit in a distance and wave to Beta, he will move his fins, looks like he is waving back to us.
- Hide and Seek - when we are looking at Beta and suddenly hide away, he will swim closer and try to find out where are we.
- Blow Bubbles - when Beta is really happy, he will blow lots of bubbles.
Facts about Beta:
- Beta has small teeth.
- Beta breathes on his own. Betta fish belongs to a group known as labyrinth
fishes, which means that they can breathe atmospheric air.
- Beta flares his fins once he sees his territories have been threaten. Once
he is flared, he looks bigger.
Taking care of Beta:
- Feed Beta three times day. 3 pellets in the morning, 3 pellets in the afternoon, and 2 pellets at night. Sometime, you can grow some baby shrimps and feed them to him, you will see Beta chasing the baby shrimps and try to catch them. If you feed Betta fish with shrimps, you should clean and replace the water after the feeding.
- Clean the bowl and replace the water once you see the water is dirty.
- Keep the water warm, that is. Beta loves warm water, he even has his own heater. Charlene always keep the water temperature around 80-82oF.

January 13, 2004 Update:
I was at Chapters, got myself a cup of coffee (white chocolate mocha) and was browsing the magazine section on one Sunday afternoon. There was a beautify Betta fish picture inside the January 2004 issue of "Architectural Digest – The International Magazine of Interior Design" magazine. It actually was an advertisement for Tiffany & Co. I found it is amusing, because Charlene is an avid reader of both the Architecture Digest and Pacific Friend, who also owns Beta.

Sometim e, She would use the beautiful scenery pictures from Architectural Digest and put them on the back of the aquarium, it will keep Beta happy
September 21, 2006 Update:
I bought a Swarovski Siamese Fighting Fish crystal last year for my birthday. It is the most beautiful and look alive crystal. The one I got is a red betta fish. Few years ago, I gave exactly the same one but in blue
for Charlene as a Christmas gift. She loves her betta fish Blueberry Beta very much. The crystal just looks like Beta.
